Wise Men on Wisdom

"There is no happiness where there is no wisdom;
No wisdom but in submission to the gods.
Big words are always punished,
And proud men in old age learn to be wise."
- Sophocles, Antigone

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."
- Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)

Sooo interesting. I read this verse yesterday, too. And it really stood out to me! Of all of the hundreds and hundreds of verses in the Bible, we both read and were "struck by" the same one! Guess it's because we have the same God. :)

bjk,

Now that I am on the other side of 30, 40 doesn't look so old at all!

I ran a retirement home for three years, and I was struck with this: we may order our lives as we want them in youth, and we may crown ourselves kings over our own little realms, but all the money in the world can't buy what an old person really wants, and high and low alike are humbled by the inescapable and outrageous indignities of old age. Humility is life's great lesson, and if we don't learn it willingly, then we will learn it, as my Dad says - "the hard way".
